DOHA: A donation campaign jointly held by Qatar Media Corporation, Qatar Charity and Qatar Red Crescent Society for Sudan flood victims has raised QR89.67mn, with QR50mn donated by the Amir, H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The campaign was held on Qatar TV.

Speaking during a live telecast on Qatar TV, Ambassador of Sudan to Qatar Abdulrahman AlSediq Mohamed praised the campaign and described the support of the people of Qatar for the people of Sudan as something natural and voluntary after the Amir gave a call to launch a quick response to the crisis in Sudan.

More than 100 people have died in devastating floods in Sudan, which has been called the worst flood in a century.

“Qatar has always been quick to respond to such difficult situations around the world and the government of Sudan highly appreciates this. The people of Qatar and Sudan have strong and deep ties and their leaderships have great cooperation with each other. Qatar has also been playing a key role in enhancing peace, stability and development in Sudan,” the ambassador added.

The campaign on Qatar TV, which lasted over two hours from 9 pm to 11 pm last night, raised a total of QR89,669,812. 

Local banks, financial institutions, private firms, health institutions, and a large number of individuals made their generous contribution to the campaign.

Ooredoo and Qatar National Bank donated QR1mn each. A number of banks, including Al Khaliji Commercial Bank, Barwa Bank, Al Ahli Bank, Commercial Bank of Qatar, Qatar Islamic Bank, Qatar International Islamic Bank and Al Rayan Bank donated QR500,000 each.

Al Jazeera Healthcare Group donated QR1mn. A group from Al Wakra (sons of Al Wakra) donated QR600,000. Another group of people donated QR715,000. Arab Engineering Bureau donated QR150,000. 

The campaign will continue.
