DOHA: With the date for reopening of schools approaching, a senior Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) official said the situation would be assessed by the MoPH and Ministry of Education and Higher Education before students can return to schools.

Director of the Public Health Department at the Ministry of Public Health, Dr Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani, speaking on Qatar Radio said the most important step remaining for the reopening of schools is risk assessments by the health sector.

He said the most important risk assessments are being done with the Ministry of Education, including the possibility of postponing studies or maintaining distance education. He said some classes may be allowed to be held, especially those in which students have sufficient awareness and a high level of commitment to preventive measures.

“There is no doubt the important point is not to increase the number of positive cases of coronavirus. We are currently assessing the situation and schools that are adhering to the measures would also be evaluated with repeated checks from time to time for students and teachers so there is a commitment to physical distance between students,” said Sheikh Mohammed.

Evaluations would be continuous and a final decision likely to be made on 1 September.
