KHARTOUM: Qatar Charity (QC) field teams initiated distribution of urgent relief aid to victims of the unprecedented devastating flood in Sudan.

The teams have delivered food parcels, personal hygiene kits, mattresses and blankets to the most affected people in Ad Damar and Berber of River Nile State, as well as in Jabal Awliya and Bahri in the Khartoum State.

The urgent humanitarian intervention comes within the framework of the `Peace for Sudan’ relief campaign launched by QC to provide QR7.3mn in urgent shelter and food aid to the affected people in Sudan.

As part of the campaign, which is expected to benefit 75,000 persons, the field teams will distribute medical and study tents and other shelter essentials, in addition to giving tents to vulnerable families.

The flood is described as the worst in Sudan in a century, which has affected more than half a million people and destroyed over 100,000 homes. Besides, 2,705 utilities were damaged and nearly 100 persons killed due to the flooding.

Qatar Red Crescent Society

The first and second batches of medical aid sent by Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), in cooperation with the Turkish Red Crescent, arrived in Khartoum to help the country combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The cargo was delivered at Khartoum International Airport containing 12.5 tonnes of medical equipment and materials to enable hospitals and quarantine centres to treat Covid-19 patients and ensure protection for medical professionals engaged in the pandemic response.

QRCS Secretary-General Ali bin Hassan Al Hammadi said: “We are going not only to deliver the medical aid cargo, but also distribute it to some beneficiary hospitals in different parts of the country.”
