DOHA: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has intensified inspection campaigns to cover all consumer complexes in Qatar during the holy month of Ramadan to check the safety and health of food products available in the market.

In a statement on Sunday, the MoPH said it had prepared a comprehensive plan to maintain tight control on these food outlets. During the initial crackdown, health inspectors from the food safety and environmental health department inspected 11 consumer complexes to check if they complied with all relevant food health and safety regulations.

The second stage to make sure that the food on sale does not contain harmful contaminants will cover 64 more complexes during Ramadan based on the population density in each area. The surprise checks focus on all factors directly or indirectly related to food quality and safety, and its impact on consumers.

The inspection covers all the stages of food preparation–from receiving raw materials until preparing the final product as well as the storage and display of the food items. Sophisticated equipment is being used by officials to assess the quality and safety of food.
