DOHA: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has advised residents to avoid smoking and exposure to passive smoking to protect their lungs as Qatar observed World No Tobacco Day. The ministry said tobacco consumption is the primary cause of lung cancer, responsible for over two-thirds of lung cancer deaths globally, stressing that lung cancer is the second most common cancer in Qatar.

Director of the Public Health Department at the Ministry, Dr Sheikh Mohamed bin Hamad Al Thani, said curbing tobacco use is the most effective way to reduce the risk of tobacco-related diseases. He stressed the need to support people who want to quit smoking and urged young people to refrain from the habit.
