DOHA: British Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace has said the depth of the relationship between Qatar and the UK is based on understanding and harmony.

In an interview with Qatar News Agency on the occasion of his visit to Doha, Wallace said Qatar’s ambition and confidence was demonstrated by winning the rights to host and organise the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

There are growing investments between the two countries and Wallace looked forward to further progress and strengthening the relationship, pointing out the UK imports Qatari gas.

On the objectives of this visit, referred to his meetings with officials in Doha, during which he expressed the UK’s keenness on Doha’s success in hosting the World Cup, in addition to providing support and assistance to achieve this.

The visit also comes with the aim of strengthening joint action between the two countries within the framework of the Typhoon squadron project, which was formed between Qatar and the UK, describing this cooperation in forming the squadron as a real success.

Typhoon squadron

On the joint flight operations of the Typhoon squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Qatar Amiri Air Force last June, Wallace said this step is symbolic and important, as reaching this stage of joint work clearly indicates that trust between the two sides.

The Typhoon squadron is ready at any time and Qatari pilots are working side by side with their British colleagues

Wallace said the UK is not taking its relationship with Qatar for granted and it is a true partnership. He stated it is a partnership where you can have than two aircraft flying side by side to protect and secure the World Cup.

Regional and key issues

On the situation in the region and key issues discussed during the visit, Wallace said the most important issues dealt with the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz safe by adhering to international law, whether with regard to airspace or maritime navigation.

He said the issue of the Strait of Hormuz is of great importance, especially since there are many countries located around this area and the UK recognises the importance of freedom of navigation for all countries.

Meetings also touched on the Gulf crisis, he said, and work that must be done to resolve the dispute, appreciating Qatar’s position which he described as “correct and based on international law”, by defending its airspace.

Wallace said Qatar plays a major role in providing stability to the region, noting the joint Typhoon squadron in Doha will be necessary given the important role Qatar plays in preserving the region’s security and stability.
