DOHA: The Bangladeshi Embassy on Saturday observed the 45th anniversary of the martyrdom of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day.

The national flag was hoisted at half-mast. Recitation of the Holy Quran was done from early in the morning seeking the salvation of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and his family members who were killed on 15 August, 1975, the embassy said in a statement.

A floral wreath was laid at a portrait of Bangabandhu to pay tribute for his great contribution to the independence of Bangladesh. Messages delivered on the day by Bangladesh’s President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out before the gathering. Bangladeshi Ambassador Ashud Ahmed paid homage to the memory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman whose historic leadership “ushered the Bengali nation to its long-cherished dream of independence”.

He called upon all members of the Bangladeshi community to uphold the image of Bangladesh in Qatar in line with the government’s efforts to turn the country into ‘Golden Bengal’.
