DOHA: The only way to end the crisis in Libya is a political solution, which is what the State of Qatar has been seeking to achieve, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah has said.

Speaking on the ‘Today’s Meeting’ programme on Qatar TV on Thursday, Al Attiyah said the instability in Libya was greatly affecting neighbouring countries and the whole region.

He described the three-way Qatari-Libyan-Turkish meetings in Tripoli as fruitful, indicating they discussed the best ways to preserve Libya’s unity and reach a political solution.

Last Monday, head of the United Nations-brokered Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya, Fayez Al Sarraj, discussed ways of military and security cooperation with Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar and Al Attiyah.

The Turkish and Qatari ministers had arrived in Tripoli for a special meeting with the Libyan government and discussed the latest developments in the country and the military build-up in eastern Sirte and the Jufra region.

The tripartite meeting touched on areas of military and security cooperation, programmes to build security and defence capabilities of the reconciliation government force, and coordination mechanisms between the ministries of defence of the three countries.
