DOHA: Qatar has played the role of mediator in 10 key regional and international issues till date, the latest being the current Afghanistan Peace Negotiations.

In a tweet, the Government Communications Office (GCO) said: “Qatar has made diplomatic efforts at regional & international levels to mediate between factions, entities and countries. Hosting Afghanistan peace negotiations demonstrates Qatar’s commitment to its role as a facilitator to find sustainable solutions to conflicts & differences.”

In 2008, Qatar brokered the Doha agreements between rival Lebanese factions which ended an 18-month long political crisis. The following year, Qatar mediated between Sudan and Chad, ending with the  Doha Accord.

Ceasefire agreement

In 2010, Qatar mediated a ceasefire agreement over a border dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea, ending a prolonged armed conflict between the two parties which had taken hundreds of lives.

In 2011, Qatar mediated between Sudan and Eritrea and the year after, Qatar mediated the 2012 Doha Agreement between the Fatah and Hamas organisations.

In 2015, Qatar successfully mediated a dispute between the Tebu and Tuareg tribes in Libya. This ended with the signing of a peace and reconciliation agreement in Doha.

Finally, this tear, Qatar mediated the signing of an agreement between the US and the Taliban to bring peace in Afghanistan.
